Celebrating One Year of Take Your Shot: Reflecting on Lessons Learned

It’s hard to believe we’re celebrating one year of the Take Your Shot Podcast! Whether you’ve been with us from the beginning or are just tuning in, I’m so grateful you’re here. This past year has been a journey filled with incredible moments and valuable lessons, and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on it all.

As I was recently getting ready for a backpacking trip, I’m reminded of how life and business can be unpredictable. We had fully planned our trip well in advance securing the most competitive permits at North Cascade national park – no seriously, we had to enter a lottery system to try and apply for the permits! Well, just days before we found out that wildfires would change everything. This experience mirrors my journey in photography and podcasting. Initially, photography was just a creative outlet, a side hustle alongside climbing the corporate ladder. But as doors closed in other areas, God called me to go full-time with wedding photography, leading me to start this podcast.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that “done is better than perfect.” As a perfectionist, especially being a One on the Enneagram, I often get stuck in the details. I worry about getting everything just right, which can lead to procrastination. But this year, I’ve focused on pushing through that and getting things done, even if they’re not perfect. It’s been freeing to let go of perfectionism and just move forward.

Another significant lesson has been the importance of accountability. A huge shoutout to my friend Laura Peters, who told me, “You cannot quit unless you’ve given it an entire year.” Her advice kept me committed, and here we are, a year later, with a podcast that has grown each month. Surrounding myself with supportive people has been crucial. It’s so easy to get lost in self-doubt, but having a network of like-minded individuals keeps me grounded and motivated.

I’ve also realized how important it is to value the right opinions and let go of those that aren’t helpful. Not everyone will understand your journey, and that’s okay. It’s vital to focus on the people who genuinely support you and align with your values. This has helped me protect my creativity and mental health, especially when dealing with social media and external validation. I’ve learned to show up and do the work, even if I don’t get immediate feedback or validation.

As we look back on this year, I’m incredibly thankful for all the support and encouragement from our community. We’ve had some amazing guests, covered diverse topics, and grown together. But we’re just getting started! I’m excited to announce our upcoming workshop in Scottsdale, Arizona, in January 2025. If you’re looking to connect in person and dive deeper into your business, this is the perfect opportunity.
